Love the Outdoors? Become a Volunteer Gardener!

Volunteer Gardeners Needed.

The garden gnomes have cleared half the front gardens at the library of the evil bindweed. It’s a great time to pick a cleared patch to keep neat. Each volunteer gardener will be responsible for just a small area.

If you are interested, read the Volunteer Gardener Policy and fill out Volunteer Gardener Form. You can also pick up a printed copy at the circulation desk.

Jacquie, the Volunteer Coordinator, will contact you to set up a time to tour the grounds and talk about what you would like to do.

Worth Watching!

Homage to Ann Carter

Syracuse Native

Ann Carter (1936-2014) was a respected, successful child actress who had important roles in some very fine films.

In 1944’s The Curse of the Cat People, sequel to 1942’s The Cat People, Ann is Amy Reed, the lonely, isolated child of caring, concerned parents, who believes she is seeing and speaking to her father’s late first wife, Irena, played by the star of the 1942 film, Simone Simon.

Though not billed as the lead in this film, Ann truly was the main star and Simone Simon thought she was amazing!

Ann played an important role in The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947), which starred none other than Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyck. As the daughter of the Bogart character,  Geoffrey Carroll, and his late first wife, she provides pivotal information to Bogart’s second wife played by Barbara Stanwyck, that helps Stanwyck realize that her husband is not a nice guy.

Ann Carter and her parents moved from Syracuse when she was two years old but maintained ties to the area through periodic visits. As a matter of fact, the first time Ann saw The Curse of the Cat People, in a theater, was here in Syracuse and to her delight, Ann Carter Day was declared.

At twelve years old, Ann contracted polio. After several arduous years of recovery, she had no interest in resuming a film career. Rather, she wanted to go to college, teach and have a family, dreams that were happily fulfilled.

When we think of people in the film world with connections to our area like Richard Gere and Tom Cruise, also think of Ann Carter.
