2010 Newbery, Caldecott Awards Announced
The Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association announced the 2010 award winning children's books.
John Newbery Medal
for most outstanding contribution to children’s literature
“When You Reach Me,” written by Rebecca Stead, is the 2010 Newbery
Medal winner. The book is published by Wendy Lamb Books, an imprint of Random House
Children’s Books.
Four Newbery Honor Books also were named:
“Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice” by Phillip Hoose and
published by Melanie Kroupa Books/Farrar Straus Giroux, an imprint of Macmillan
Children’s Publishing Group; “The Evolution of Calpurnia
Tate” by Jacqueline Kelly and published by Henry Holt and Company;
“Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” by Grace Lin and published by
Little, Brown and Company Books for Young Readers; and “The Mostly True
Adventures of Homer P. Figg” by Rodman Philbrick and published by The
Blue Sky Press, An Imprint of Scholastic Inc.
Randolph Caldecott Medal for most distinguished American picture book for
children
“The Lion & the Mouse,” illustrated and written by Jerry
Pinkney, is the 2010 Caldecott Medal winner. The book was published by Little,
Brown and Company Books for Young Readers.
Two Caldecott Honor Books also were named: “All
the World,” illustrated by Marla Frazee, written by Liz Garton Scanlon
and published by Beach Lane Books; and “Red Sings from Treetops: A Year
in Colors,” illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski, written by Joyce Sidman and
published by Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

The Council, which consists of a panel of 12 librarians from across the United States, selects the titles for their significant contribution to the expansion of knowledge and for the pleasure they can provide to adult readers.
Small Business Development Center
The Onondaga Small Business Development Center offers free and confidential counseling to people in business or thinking about going into business.
Before making charitable donations one can check the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance. The alliance collects and distributes information on hundreds of nonprofit organizations that solicit nationally or have national or international program services. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance never recommends one charity over another, and selects charities for evaluation based on the volume of donor inquiries about individual organizations. All local Better Business Bureaus in the United States disseminate Alliance educational materials. Local BBB's also report on organizations whose fund raising efforts are local in scope.

Developed by the U.S. Department of Labor Career One Stop provides job hunters with a place to post a resume and look at job postings from all over the United States.
It is a meta-search engine that merges job-posting links for Central New York State. The database currently contains 8890 job links from 406 websites.
A collection of articles and Internet resources designed to aid in the process of job hunting. The site is designed as a supplement to his book What Color is Your Parachute which is available for loan at the Baldwinsville Public Library.
New York State Department of Civil Service
Provides information on Civil Service as it relates to employment with New York State Agencies and it includes exam announcements.

Provides information on Civil Service within Onondaga County including exam announcements.
New York State Department of Labor
The site provides information for job seekers, employees and employers including but not limited to finding a job, employment programs, employment law and the labor market in New York State.

Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database
There are a number of ways to access vital records (or at least sources of vital records) on the net but this site is nice because it is comprehensive and appears to be regularly updated. However it is a personal, not a government, site and may not be authoritative.
· The library subscribes to Ancestry Plus, which contains over 1.2 billion records in over 3,000 databases. Included in Ancestry Plus are the digitized images of the U.S. Federal Census from 1790 forward, the American Genealogical Biographical Index, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, and much more. Ancestry will not sell us remote access to the database thus you will need to come in to the library to use Ancestry Plus.
· Heritage also has numerous genealogy records. It can be used in the library or from home with a library card and PIN.
· American Memory Historic maps, photos, documents, audio and video resources from the Library of Congress.
Main Medicare site for consumers and others. Use it for general information, answers to general questions and links to key applications. I.e. “extra help” assistance for lower income people, Medicare Drug Plan Finder.
Contains an overview and instructions, in 15 languages, on the new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
The federal agency that oversees both Medicaid and medicare.
New York State’s site for HIICAP it describes key parts of this program. Provides links to other NYS (e.g. EPIC Rx program) and national sources.

11, 2001 New York State’s Project Liberty
Project Liberty, which was created in 2001 to provide supportive crisis counseling to individuals and groups affected by the World Trade Center disaster, has phased down operations. This web site has been redesigned primarily to link individuals and groups to services that will help them to continue to cope with the aftereffects of the World Trade Center disaster.
In the search box enter September 11th and the search results will show an annotated list of related sites within New York City’s official website.
The links listed below are to websites that have been selected as appropriate for children. However, since the Internet is constantly changing what is appropriate today may be inappropriate tomorrow. While the library regularly checks these links it cannot guarantee that they will still be suitable in the future.
A kid-friendly way for kids to find answers to their questions online. Designed to be a fun destination site focused on learning and "edutainment," Ask Jeeves for Kids uses natural-language technology that allows kids to ask questions, such as "Why is the sky blue?" or "What's it like to live in space?". The service combines human editorial judgment with filtering technology to enable kids to find both relevant and appropriate answers on the Web.
Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids is a service of the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). The site provides learning tools for K-12 students, parents, and teachers. The resources will teach how our government works, the use of the primary source materials of GPO Access, and how one can use GPO Access to carry out their civic responsibilities. And, just as GPO Access provides locator services to U.S. Government sites, Ben's Guide provides a similar service to U.S. Government Web sites developed for kids.

For kids aged 9 to 14 FactMonster.com combines reference materials, fun facts and features including an encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, and the Information Please® kids' almanac. There is a Homework Center in addition to fun games and quizzes.
KidsClick! is a web search engine created for kids by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System.

Board of Elections for Onondaga County
The Onondaga County Board of Elections is a County Office, responsible for all federal, state, county, city and town elections in Onondaga County. The site contains board of election news, voter registration information, political calendar, candidate information, a list of polling places and maps outlining the political and election districts within Onondaga County.
